I’ll never forget the day Nelson Mandela was released from gaol and marched with his wife Winnie to the Cape Town City Hall.
I followed South Africa’s transition to majority rule because I was active in the Anti-Apartheid Movement. So learning their national anthem, Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika (“God Bless Africa” in Xhosa language), was just one of the songs we sung. Whenever I hear or sing it now, tears come to my eyes.
Here’s a notable and powerful occasion where it was sung by a huge crowd in a football stadium in Zimbabawe before majority rule.
